2006 and 2007 National Poetry Slams:
This annual performance poetry competition— the first and largest of its kind—brings over 300 poets from 75 different venues in North America and Europe for a five-day extravaganza that is part competition, part convention, and part poetry summer camp.
We coordinated media coverage for both the 2006 and 2007 events, which included sold-out shows at Austin’s historic Paramount Theater and an audience of literally thousands attending in venues throughout downtown Austin and the South Congress district.
Coverage included a cover story in the Austin American-Statesman’s XL Event arts and entertainment weekly, considerable coverage in both the Statesman and the Austin Chronicle, and additional coverage from KUT-FM (NPR-Austin), KTBC-TV (FOX-Austin), KEYE-TV (CBS-Austin), News 8 Austin (Time Warner Cable-Austin), the Dallas Morning News, the San Antonio Express-News, Austinist, Austin360.com, Rare, and Southwest Spirit. We also brokered media sponsorships with Austinist and the Austin Chronicle, and an event sponsorship with HLS Technologies, Inc.

Asylum Street Spankers:
This Austin-based musical group has both won fans and defied easy description for well over a decade with a mix of country, blues, gospel, and vaudeville styles. While honoring traditional American roots music, the Spankers are not revivalists – rather, they’re featuring the same sort of innovation early hip-hop artists did when they used funk and soul as the backbone for an entirely new musical style.
Our media relations campaign for the Spankers targeted broadcast media, theater and performing arts critics, and feature writers at the national and regional levels, in order to augment the group’s existing traditional PR outreach. Coverage we secured included TV feature segments on KSDK-TV (NBC-St. Louis) and KABB-TV (Fox-San Antonio) and an interview with Ann Arbor NPR affiliate KWMU-FM. We also coordinated coverage of the band for an Austin-American Statesman feature connected to the release of the band’s critically-acclaimed children’s album.
